Makoto Shinkai blev tidigt uppmärksammad för sina kortfilmer "She and  Her Cat" (1999) och "Voices of a Distant Star" (2002). 2016 blev i  Japan hans succéfilm "Your Name" den mest sedda anime-filmen någonsin,  näst efter Miyazakis "Spirited Away".

5 CENTIMETER PER SECOND , som tidigare inte har visats på bio i  Sverige, är en av Makoto Shinkais mest älskade filmer. Den innehåller  alla ingredienser som kännetecknar hans anime såsom drömska poetiska  bilder, stora omvälvande känslor och vacker musik.

Director Makoto Shinkai's heartfelt animated drama tells the tale of  two close friends separated by chance, and reunited by determination.  Takaki and Akari are two classmates in elementary school. During their  time together they have become close friends. Their relationship is  tested when Akari moves to another city because of her parents' jobs.  Both of them struggle to keep their friendship alive, as time and  distance slowly pulls them apart. When Takaki finds out that he is  moving further away, he decides to visit Akari one last time. This is  the story of Takaki and Akari as told in three parts: From the  perspective of both friends, as well as the vantage point of those  they both meet along the way.
