Vem berättar kenyanska HBTQ-personers berättelse? 
Medlemmar av den multi-disciplinära konstkollektivet THE NEST spenderade flera månader resandes genom Kenya för att samla in berättelsen från HBTQ-personer. Slutligen bestämde de sig att spela in några av dessa berättelser, med egen finansiering och enkel utrustning. Resultatet är STORIES OF OUR LIVES, ett visuellt och konceptuellt mästerverk, som Jim Chuchu gestaltat i skarpa, otroligt vackra och poetiska svartvita bilder, ackompanjerad av ett matchande soundtrack.

STORIES OF OUR LIVES är en filmantologi om vanliga människor i storstan och på landsbygden, och följer dem genom drömsk kärlek och in i det djupaste mörker, till de små mötena människor emellan och de stora politiska händelserna. Vad de har gemensamt är längtan efter kärlek och frågan om det är bättre att gömma sig eller lämna landet, eller bättre att stanna och öppet kämpa för sexuell mångfald?
Trots att filmen har bannlysts från offentliga visningar i Kenya, har medlemmarna i THE NEST valt det senare och är fast beslutna att fortsätta sin kamp för erkännande.
STORIES OF OUR LIVES är även en film som utmanar strukturerna för filmproduktion genom att ifrågasätta finansieringssystemet och vem som tar bilder av vem och vems röst som får höras. Det är en film som inspirerar "communities" att göra sina egna, självständiga filmprojekt.

EFTER FILMEN kommer vi att ha en chans att prata med Jude Dibia som är Malmös fristadförfattare och författare till den första nigerianska romanen som har en homosexuell man som huvudperson - Walking with Shadows - liksom romanerna Unbridled och Blackbird. Om vi har tur kommer vi att ha en medlem av The Nest Collective, de ursprungliga skaparna av boken som blev filmen STORIES OF OUR LIVES, med oss via Skype.

Who is telling the stories of Kenyan LGBTQ-people? 
Members of the multi-disciplinary art collective The NEST spent several months travelling Kenya collecting stories of LGBTQ people. Finally, they decided to film some of these, without external funding and with simple equipment. The result is called STORIES OF OUR LIVES, a visually and conceptually masterpiece, set in crisp, incredible beautiful and poetic black-and-white images by Jim Chuchu, and accompanied by a measured soundtrack. 

STORIES OF OUR LIVES is a series of short films about ordinary people in the city and on the country-side, following them in dreamy love and in to the deepest darkness, to the little encounters between humans and the major political events. What they have in common is the need for love and the question, if it is better to hide away or leave the country, or to stay and fight openly for sexual diversity?
In spite of the film being banned from public screenings in Kenya, the members of The NEST have opted for the latter and are determined to continue their struggle for recognition.
STORIES OF OUR LIVES is also a film that that challenges the structures of film-production by questioning the funding-system and who takes pictures of whom, whose voice may be heard. It's a movie that inspires communities to make their own, independent film projects.
