Galleri Fish Tank samarbetar under WorldPride med Folkets Bio Malmö / biograf Panora och film- & kulturfestivalen Malmö Queer Film Festival: WorldPride Edition 12 – 22 augusti.

Utställningen består av helt nya fotoverk av queerkonstnären Del LaGrace Volcano. Hen skapade fotoserien från ett behov av att röra sig bort från de begränsningar den samtida könsdebatten bidrar till.

"Kategorier, pronomen och ord som klistras fast vid våra kroppar är mindre intressant — könsidentitet är frivilligt — än vad dessa kroppar faktiskt GÖR. We, som avviker från traditionella könsnormer, rör oss genom världen och därmed skapar små ruckningar som till slut leder till vågor och sköljer bort eller genom de kulturella strukturer som håller oss på utsidan.

Alla som är en del av den här fotoserien har inspirerat mig genom deras vilja att bryta genom sociala normer, vilka inkluderar men är inte begränsade till könsnormer, oavsett priset. Dessa porträtt uttrycker samtidigt de mångbottnade behag, både de förhöjda och bitterljuva, som följer av att vara den förändring du önskar se i världen. — Del LaGrace Volcano

GENDER OPTIONAL: PROFILES OF COURAGE presents entirely new work by the gender queer artist and activist Del LaGrace Volcano. They (hen) devised this project because of their desire to move beyond the constraints of contemporary debates around gendered identities.

"The labels, pronouns, the words that become stuck to our bodies are far less important, gender is optional, than what these bodies actually DO. We, who are gender dissidents, move through the world creating tiny ripples and then waves that can eventually erode or crash through the cultural edifices that keep us on the outside looking in.

All of those who are part of this project have inspired me by their willingness to disrupt social norms, including, but not limited to gender norms, regardless of the costs. These portraits are simultaneously visceral demonstrations of the many pleasures, sublime and bitter sweet, that come from being the change in the world you want to see.” — Del LaGrace Volcano

Del LaGrace Volcano (born California 1957) is considered to be a pioneer and instigator of queer LGBTI+ culture. A formally trained photographer Volcano's work includes photography, installation, spoken word, performance and film created with the intention to interrogate the performance and lived practice of gender and the sexed body on multiple levels.

Volcano earned a MA in Photographic Studies at University of Derby, UK in 1992 after studying photography at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1979-81. Assigned and raised female from birth Volcano discovered they were intersex at the age of 37 and from 1995 has identified as both female and male, both, neither, non-binary, gender queer and/or agender. Volcano has published 5 photographic monographs on the queer subcultures they have inhabited over the course of five decades.
