For decades, Congo has endured cycles of foreign intervention, militia violence, war, and mass displacement. What is often framed as “conflict” cannot be separated from a longer history of colonial plunder and the ongoing extraction of resources that fuel the global economy. From rubber and copper to cobalt and coltan, and through the exploitation of the rainforest itself, Congolese land has been systematically stripped — first under formal colonial rule, and today through the logics of extractive capitalism.
By centering Congo, this program seeks to confront that silence and to insist on an analysis that links coloniality, ecology, capital, and racialized violence. The production of “death worlds” in Congo is not accidental; it is entangled with global systems of extraction and the hierarchies of solidarity that determine which lives are grievable and which environments are rendered livable.
About The Tree of Authenticity (2025)
Set in the heart of the Congo rainforest, The Tree of Authenticity uncovers the ruins of a former tropical agricultural research center. This site exposes the enduring burden of colonialism and its deep entanglement with contemporary climate change. Through this site, the film traces a historical and material continuum: from colonial resource extraction to today’s neocolonial forms of extractive capitalism.
