Malmö Queer Film Festival bjuder in till filmvisning av This is Ballroom – en livfull hyllning till den brasilianska ballroom-scenen, där HBTQ+-personer och icke-vita skapar det kreativa utrymme som de nekas i ett repressivt samhälle. Rio brinner!

This is Ballroom är en inblick i universumet av ballroomkultur i Rio de Janeiro och dess förorter. Vi skildrar vår gemenskap som en plats för samling och firande, men också som ett utrymme där konflikter kan hanteras.

Vi filmade en ball som speciellt hölls för detta projekt och följde sedan vardagslivet för några av de hus som deltog i evenemanget. Filmen är strukturerad som ett multiplot-narrativ och innehåller exklusiva uppträdanden på utomhusmiljöer och starka vittnesmål. För att berätta historier från det förflutna använde vi arkivbilder och återskapningar av grundläggande händelser inom ballkulturen i USA, där vår ensemble spelar historiska karaktärer.

Bland de konflikter som uppstod under inspelningarna finns rivaliteter relaterade till rasfrågor och könskategorier. Vi diskuterar också komplexiteten i att översätta en amerikansk kultur till den brasilianska verkligheten, och innovationer som skapades här, såsom Batekoo-kollektivet – född inom favelaernas funkballs.

This is Ballroom is an upbeat tribute to the Brazilian ballroom scene, where LGBTQ+ and non-white people create the creative space they are not allowed in a repressive society. Rio is burning!

This is Ballroom is an insider gaze at the universe of Ballroom culture in Rio de Janeiro and its outskirts. We portray our community as a place of gathering and celebration but also a space where conflicts can be dealt with.

We filmed a ball specially held for this project, then followed the daily lives of some houses that attended the event. Structured as a multiplot narrative, the film features exclusive performances in outdoor locations and strong testimonies. To tell stories from the past, we used archival images and reenactments of foundational events of ball culture in the USA, with our cast role-playing historical characters.

Among the conflicts emerged during the shootings, there are rivalries related to racial issues and gender categories. We also discuss the complexities of translating a US-American culture to Brazilian reality, and innovations created here, like the Batekoo collective - born within the favela's funk balls.
